"I love the way The Illustrators Union fosters a real sense of "belonging" to something bigger than yourself but is friendly, accessible and committed to empowering individuals.

Even with 14 years of full time illustrating behind me, membership of The Union has suddenly opened a door to fresh ideas, new strategies, exciting connections and hands-on help towards building a stronger business.

To me, that's invaluable." Joy Gosney

FAQs

So how does this work exactly?

When you join the Illustrators’ Union, you’ll be added to the private mailing list and invited to join the private networking group which is where you’ll be able to:

  • Meet fellow members in our private community group.
  • Get business support during weekly ‘Office Hours’ sessions.
  • Access extra resources such as the Business Guide, Style Guide & more.
  • Submit entries to & review the Global Fees Database.
  • Submit entries to & review the Rate Your Client Database.
  • Submit your work to the Union Tumblr blog for display.

The group and mailing list are the Union Hubs and you’ll find everything you need there, as soon as you join.

Who are the experts?

The following expert resources are on hand to answer any questions you submit:

  • Business, Marketing & Strategy advice – to help you address how to better run and grow your business.
  • Technology & tools advice – to help you better leverage online technology tools to run your business.
  • Accounting & finance advice (UK only) – to help you get control of your finances.
  • Advice from illustration mentors – to help you access advice from experienced fellow creatives.

Please note that our experts will do their best to provide as tailored advice as possible, but they are not a substitute for a dedicated business coach or mentor.

What is the Union Pledge?

When you join, we’ll invite you to agree to the Union Pledge. This is optional but we strongly encourage members to agree to the pledge, as part of our ethos is to empower you to deliver on this pledge.

You’ll also receive access to a range of badges which you can freely display on your website, to demonstrate your commitment to the pledge.

Can I leave at any time?

Of course. You are free to leave (or re-start) your membership of TIU at any time.

When you join, your membership fee is locked in at that rate for as long as you remain a member. If at any time you leave, you will have to re-join at the going rate and will not be eligible to re-join at the rate you previously had.

How is this different from The AOI (UK), The Society of Illustrators (US) or any other existing body?

The creation of TIU is in response to having run our former resource for illustrators (zero2illo) since 2008 – and having an intimate knowledge of the kinds of support fellow illustrators have requested from us during this time.

It’s a continuation of what we started with hosting two zero2illo LIVE conferences and fills a gap in the market.

Our mission, if you like, is to provide resources to help you become a successful illustrator in the 21st century.

There may be some cross-over with what’s on offer at The AOI, The Society of Illustrators or any other body, but this is where we believe we differ:

  1. We support a GLOBAL group of illustrators – and will be looking to leverage this, and encourage illustrators to look beyond their borders for opportunities and inspiration.
  2. Our goal is to empower you – to enable you to become a better illustrator and run a better business leveraging your illustration skills in this age of fast-paced change, with access to practical tools and resources, and to give you the confidence to do this yourself.
  3. We run a lean and agile organisation – at the forefront of the world of work online, and we see the global, cross-border opportunities every single day (and have done since 2006). This means we can adapt, respond and change quickly, and as needed – as determined by members. We don’t need to go to a committee for every tiny little change that’s required.

Finally, we believe there’s room for every organisation that is committed to progressing the development and opportunities for illustrators worldwide – and while others may see us as competition, our goal – first and foremost – is to support illustrators to be the best they can be and run the best business they can run.
